A great post, and very relevant for me. We didn't move much when I was a kid (two main homes, with a couple of year-long rentals in between). But as you said about your father, I've "got the itch". Before I met my spouse I was a move-at-the-end-of-the-lease kind of girl. Now I've got a stable spouse (read: homebody) and a kid who isn't wild about change. We're contemplating a cross-country move that would only be semi-permanent. We'd keep our house on the east coast and rent it out, and move for 2-3 years to the SF Bay Area. If we liked it, we'd sell our house back east and stay in Cali. If we didn't like it (or missed our affordable life back east), we'd come back. But I worry about what a move will do to my little guy. Glad to hear you're not scarred from moving a lot as a kid.
